I believe it was back in the early to mid '70's when Fred started taking me hunting. First it was Quail, maybe Rabbit also, and then I guess Fred thought I was good enough to go duck hunting with him. I really wasn't that good of a hunter, and I knew he knew this, but he knew what my motives were and he was very patient and tought me how to use my grandfathers shotgun and, as luck has it, I managed not to hurt anyone. The one hunting trip that stands out the most, was the trip to Camden Bottoms near his hometown where Fonzie and Mary lived. We left Nashville very early, 3 AM. Wilma had made some sausage and biscuits the night before and I believe I ate most of these before we arrived at the duck blind. Looking over at me while driving the big, blue Buick saying, "you going to leave any for me?" Getting to the blind was interesting in itself. Fred kept saying, "it's around here somewhere." Of course, he knew all along where he was leading me. We were successful that cold morning, and we had plenty to talk about on the drive back to Nashville. A great memory that was repeated a few times following that day and one that I will always remember and cherish.
My loving thoughts go out to Wilma, Connie, Carol, Lisa Marie and their families.
