Obituary for Joseph Dykes Johnson, Sr.

Joseph D. Johnson, Sr., age 80 of Thompson Station, TN a very special man passed away July 27, 2018. Joseph D. Johnson was a person who helped so many people but he never wanted anyone to know about it. His family often only found out about his good deeds by accident or from the people he helped. Left to remember his good deeds are his loving wife of 59 years, Suzanne; sons, Joseph D. “Joe” (Melissa) Johnson, Jr., Harold B. “Hal” (Vicky) Johnson and Charles “Lee” (Angie) Johnson; grandchildren he adored, Hunter, Rachael and Allie Grace; brother, Edwin Rusing “Pete” Johnson who Joe loved and looked up to all of his life, a special “big brother”. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Duncan and Delia Johnson; brother, Ralph “Buck” Duncan, Jr. and sister, Mary Elizabeth Foy. Joe graduated from Wofford College in 1959 (a year early) in Spartanburg, South Carolina. After moving to Nashville, he worked for the old Commerce Union Bank (now gone) and after graduating from the old Night Law School at the YMCA he became a tax attorney. After he moved to Birmingham, Alabama for four years, he came back and practiced in Franklin for many years. He enjoyed working with his son, Joe Jr. who also became a lawyer. They were together until he retired. Joe was also very proud that he was in the Army Reserve for 22 years. Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Saturday, August 11, 2018 at Brenthaven Cumberland Presbyterian Church and visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Williamson Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that donations in memory of Joe be given to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org) or to the Brenthaven Cumberland Presbyterian Church, 516 Franklin Road, Brentwood, TN 37027.
