Obituary for Dr. William T. "Bill" Penrod, Jr.

Dr. William T. Penrod, Jr., or Bill as he preferred, age 86, was retired from teaching psychology at Middle Tennessee State University for 23 years where he was awarded Professor Emeritus and also from his counseling practice of more than 40 years. He held a BD and ThM from Southern Seminary in Louisville and a PhD from the University of Florida. Bill always maintained “a person-first perspective” making students more important than rules and learning more important than grades. He gave his time and talents to help students and clients alike succeed in their own growth. He always saw his work as ministry, the calling that dominated his life until the disease of Alzheimer’s could no longer be overcome. His family and many others of his larger influence will continue to recognize the blessings of his compassion and well thought out perspectives that he offered. Survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean Macdonald Penrod of Franklin, TN and their son, John Paul Penrod of Nashville, TN; his daughters, Cheryl (Bill) Puryear of Gallatin, TN, Dr. Laura (Mike) Moseng of Madison, IN and Paula Penrod of Nashville, TN; grandchildren, Kate, Grace and Hayden Puryear and great grandchild, Luke Brown all of Gallatin, TN. A memorial service will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, February 4, 2016 at the Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church, Main Street, Franklin, TN with Rev. Sara Hughes officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Historic Franklin Presbyterian Church or charity of your choice.
