Obituary for Marvin Haynes "Tippy" Grimsley

Marvin Haynes “Tippy” Grimsley, age 79, born June 13, 1936, passed away July 3, 2015. Son of the late John Russell and Mary Elizabeth Putnam Grimsley of Orlean, VA. Tippy is well known around the thoroughbred community in Northern VA and Kentucky. He was employed by the late Thomas Mellon Evans, owner of Buckland Farm in Gainesville, VA and his son the late Edwards P. Evans, owner of Spring Hill Farm in Casanova, VA. He raised some quality horses for the Evans family including such greats as Quality Road and Pleasant Colony. He was a breeder and through the years others have learned a lot about horses from Tippy and have heard some awesome names of horses he made or was a part of his life for over forty years on the two farms at home in VA. Tippy is survived by his wife of 38 years, Elizabeth Jeffries Grimsley and daughter, Donna Taylor Ryan, both of Spring Hill, TN, having lived there the last 3 years where both had health issues. Between the two of them they had 10 children with 2 deceased and the rest live in the surrounding area of VA or nearby states. Tippy is also survived by two brothers, Charles Russell Grimsley, Marshall, VA and Johnnie Grimsley, Orlean, VA; and sister, Irma M. Sheets, Culpepper, VA. A Celebration of Life will be held 1-5PM Sunday, August 9, 2015 at Orlean Volunteer Fire Dept., 6838 Leeds Manor Rd., Marshall, VA 20115. Graveside services will be conducted 10AM Monday, August 10, 2015 at Hill Crest Memorial Gardens, 4160 Rixeyville Rd., Jeffersonton, VA 22724. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Tippy Grimsley Memorial Fund to assist in his final expenses.
