Obituary for Larry Neil Mitchell

On July 10, 2015, surrounded by his wife and daughters, Larry opened his eyes into eternity. Larry’s heart was always for his family. Instilling a deep sense of loyalty and commitment. Even during struggles and hardship, we learned how to live out the true definition of forgiveness and grace.
Larry was born and raised in Florence, Alabama. He was the first son of Clarence and Myron Mitchell. He was preceded in death by one sister, Deborah Mitchell Grandenetti; and is survived by 2 brothers, Keith and Kevin Mitchell; and 1 sister, Teresa Mitchell Howard.
He leaves behind his wife, and love of his live, Pamela Shooter Mitchell. They were, each the others, first loves, meeting at Central High and marrying soon after graduation. Throughout their 46 years of living out the good and the hard, they built a marriage riddled with grace and commitment. Together, they had three daughters, Amber Steranka (Kyle), Autumn Taylor (Nick) and April Mortimer (Micah) of Tennessee. He was the proud granddaddy of 16 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
After high school, Larry joined the Army and served for 4 years in intelligence during the Vietnam War. Afterwards, he worked in many careers including insurance, the mortgage industry and traded stocks on the board of trade. He lived in many places including Texas, Alabama, Florida, Illinois and Tennessee.
Larry was most comfortable at home when spending time living life with his family. He was an avid lover of classic cars and history, especially World War II. He was one of Alabama football’s biggest fans. He loved sports, playing baseball and football in high school and later on developing a love for basketball while supporting and coaching his daughters. He began a homeschool high school program helping under privileged kids have another chance to succeed while playing basketball. He was a master with words and enjoyed writing songs and stories.
Larry would be most proud of the legacy he leaves within his family. Giving the strength to believe anything is possible if you try, determination to never give in, courage to strive for something more, freedom to make mistakes and chase dreams, confidence to just be, hope for new mercies and beginnings and the heart and love for a family that never gives up on one another.

“We were together. I forget the rest.” Walt Whitman
