Obituary for Virginia Wilson Hill

Virginia Wilson  Hill
Mrs. Virginia W. Hill died peacefully February 14, 2015, at Somerfield Health Center. A memorial service will be held at 2PM Saturday, March 7, at Brentwood United Methodist Church with Bishop Robert Spain officiating. A reception will immediately follow at the church.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Lowell Hill; her parents, Ora and Shedie Wilson; sister, Mary Herbert; and brother, Joe D. Wilson.
She is survived by daughters, Madeleine Hill and husband, Dr. William Winternitz, Tuscaloosa, AL, Pegine Hill, Franklin, TN; granddaughter, Virginia Tameron Hedge, Nashville, TN; and several nieces and nephews.
Born September 7, 1916, in Franklin, TN, she began her teaching career by age 19 at Lankford Academy in Williamson County and taught until her marriage. While rearing her family, she was active in local and state Parent-Teacher Associations and returned to college to complete her BA and MA degrees at George Peabody College.
Returning to the teaching profession, she established the first full-time counselor program at Franklin High School. After retiring there, she was asked to establish a counselor program at Franklin Junior High in the Franklin Special School District. She was presented the Hobbs Award as State Counselor of the Year in recognition of her outstanding contributions in education.
A long-time member of Brentwood United Methodist Church, she had been active in many of its programs, including United Methodist Women, the Andrew Ministry, Kneelers, Chrismons and the Robert I. Moore Class. She was an active member or volunteer in many groups including the Heritage Foundation of Franklin and Williamson County, Friends of the Brentwood Library, Historical Brentwood, the Franklin-Williamson County Retired Teachers Association, Fifty Forward Martin Center, and the American Red Cross.
She pursued many interests with diligence and intensity including reading, world travel, needlework, crossword puzzles and bridge.
Honorary pallbearers are the Robert I. Moore Sunday School Class, Retired Teachers Association of Franklin-Williamson County, Beta Sigma Phi sorority and staff of Somerfield at the Heritage.
The family requests memorial gifts directed to Brentwood United Methodist Church, 309 Franklin Road, Brentwood, TN 37027, American Red Cross of Williamson County, 129 West Fowlkes Street, Franklin, TN 37064, or the donor’s charity of choice.
