Obituary for Beverly Walter Landstreet III

Beverly Walter Landstreet III
Beverly Walter Landstreet, III, age 92, passed away at his home on October 4, 2014. Born in Nashville, TN to the late Francis Landstreet and J. Barbour Barnett. Survived by wife of 68 years, Nancy Anderson Landstreet (with whom he flirted until the very end); children: Lucia Cherry (Larry), James Collins II (Jennifer), Jane Longhurst (Rusty), Beverly Walter IV (Julia) and Thomas Fairfax (Laura); 15 grand children; cousin: Peg Chance (Cecil); and siblings: Enid Nagel, William G. Barnett, Robert J. Barnett and Ann Leach, all of Houston, TX. Bev’s large family brought him great joy.

Graduated from Duncan Preparatory School for Boys, Nashville, and attended The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, until the attack on Pearl Harbor inspired him to enlist in the Navy V-5 program, December 1941. Graduating from Naval Officer Training School, Pensacola, FL as a 2nd Lieutenant, US Marine Corps, stationed at Cherry Point, NC. As a fighter pilot. he was a part of the VMB413 Flying Nightmares (Lucky 13) and flew F4U’s (Corsairs) on night bombing raids in the Solomon Islands.

Received six air medals including the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Commendation Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (3 Stars), American Campaign Medal (Leyte Gulf), and the Philippine Liberation Medal.

His tales of war in the South Pacific emphasized the lighter side of his experience. One of which, as a pilot back from the Pacific theatre, he routinely buzzed Vanderbilt campus and the pre-med class of his girlfriend, Nancy Anderson, as he arrived from Cherry Point to court her on weekends.

Upon returning from the war, graduated from the Nashville School of Law with a LLB. In 1950, he formed the investment banking firm of Clark, Landstreet & Kirkpatrick. In 1960, merged with R.S. Dickson & Co., forming Philo Smith, Landstreet & Co. Later acquired Allen C. Ewing, Co. and formed Financial Securities Advisors. Retired from the investment business in 1993, but remained active as an investor until an accident while skydiving on his 90th birthday prompted his retirement. Bev enjoyed life.

Bev’s love of family, God and America knew no bounds. Passionate and active member of civic boards, business clubs, social clubs, faith communities, and service organizations. Loved people and remained surrounded and connected throughout his life. America’s active service men and women were never far from his mind. He constantly reminded us to pray for the “soldiers, sailors and marines fighting terrorism on a world wide basis.“

Services will be held on Wednesday, October 8, 2014 at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the visitation beginning at 11am and services at 12:30pm. Private graveside service will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Nashville, TN. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Wounded Warrior Project.
